  • LightMachinery acquires GSI's Lumonics excimer laser lines, expands production facilities
    LightMachinery Inc. has concluded an agreement with GSI Group to purchase the Lumonics brand excimer laser product lines. The acquisition of the excimer products follows LightMachinery's recent acquisition of the TEA CO2 infrared laser product lines from GSI Group.
  • GSI Group to acquire Excel for ~$360M
    GSI Group has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Excel in an all-cash transaction for $32.00 per share, or ~$360 million, before fees and transaction costs. The offer price represents a 30.2% premium to the average Excel closing share price over the last 30 trading days.

  • Synova receives multi-system order from European solar cell manufacturer
    Synova has received a follow-on order for its Laser MicroJet (LMJ) systems from a European-based solar cell manufacturer. Representing one of Synova's largest equipment orders to date, the 25 LMJ systems will be integrated into its customer's edge-defined film-fed growth (EFG) process — a leading-edge, proprietary silicon-efficient technology — at its European-based solar fab.
  • Gooch & Housego to acquire General Optics for US$21M
    Gooch & Housego PLC has announced a definitive agreement to acquire the business and assets of General Optics from GSI Group for US$21 million. The sale is expected to close within 60 days, pending regulatory approval.
  • Rapid Sheet Metal Inc. purchases new in house high power laser
    Rapid Sheet Metal Inc., a Nashua, NH company specializing in sheet metal and stamped metal prototypes, has purchased a new in-house, high power laser that reduces cutting lead-times of flat parts by up to 50%, enabling the company to meet even tighter turnaround times.
  • DataLase, ORBID agree to settle patent infringement case
    DataLase, Widnes, UK, and ORBID have agreed to settle the patent infringement case brought by ORBID against DataLase and FractureCode in the Netherlands relating to ORBID's patents on their 2DMI technology.
  • Laser Safety Officer course to be held Aug. 11-13 in Denver
    A Laser Safety Officer course will be held August 11-13 in Denver, CO. This course, given by the Laser Institute of America (LIA), takes a non-mathematical approach designed to teach the duties of Laser Safety Officer as described in the ANSI Z136.1 Safe Use of Lasers standard.
  • Andrew Brown joins SPIE as global development head
    Dr. Andrew (Andy) J. W. Brown has joined SPIE as senior director for global business development. Brown succeeds Janice Gaines Walker in the senior director position at SPIE. Walker is retiring this month after 24 years with the Society.
