• CCAT receives DOE grant
  The Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology Inc. (CCAT) has announced the receipt of a two-year grant from the Department of Energy (DOE) to promote hydrogen and fuel cell technology in early market applications.
• Domino Printing buys German maker of laser sources and marking systems
  Domino Printing Sciences Plc has announced that it has agreed to the terms for buying Photon Energy GmbH and its subsidiary, NWL Lasertechnologie GmbH, for ~US $6.23 million (4 million euros) in cash, according to various news reports.
• James Rogowski named managing director of TRUMPF Canada
  James Rogowski has been appointed managing director of TRUMPF CANADA. TRUMPF Inc. recently acquired the remaining shares of Advanced Fabricating Machinery which serves the Canadian Market as a sales and spare parts facility for TRUMPF products.
• Ophir-Spiricon launches new laser power web site and technical resource
  Ophir-Spiricon has announced the launch of the new Ophir-Spiricon web site at www.ophir-spiricon.com. Thesite provides quick and easy access to a wide range of technical resources for power/energy measurement, laser beam profiling, and spectrum analysis.
• JPSA opens customer service and support office in Malaysia
  J. P. Sercel Associates (JPSA) announces the opening of a customer service and support office in Malaysia that will focus exclusively on the combined territories of Malaysia, China, and Singapore, and provide service, installations, and training, and will stock spare parts for customers of JPSA's laser workstations for wafer processing and micromachining.
• Active Learning project promotes science education around the world
  Workshops for educators promoting an innovative method of teaching physics that uses optics and photonics as an experimental topic will be held in Zambia in September and Cameroon in December, organizers have announced. Proposals for 2009 have been received from Peru and Nepal, according to program specialist Minella Alarcon of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
• Laser Focus World and OIDA announce a new conference/exhibition, OPTOmism: Photonics for the Green Revolution
  Laser Focus World, the leading photonics-industry trade publication, and the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA), a not-for-profit association that serves as the nexus for vision, transformation, and growth of the photonics and optoelectronics industry, recently announced a new conference and exhibition, OPTOmism: Photonics for the Green Revolution, to be held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA, May 18-20, 2009.
• Yorkshire Laser takes delivery of its new Byspeed laser cutting machine
  Yorkshire Laser, Castleford, West Yorkshire, UK, which specializes in laser profiling and precision sheet metal work, has recently taken delivery of its new Byspeed 3015 4.4kw flat bed laser cutting machine.
• Vytek introduces a laser scribing system for photovoltaic panel production
  Vytek, Fitchburg, MA, has introduced the ProtoScribe laser scribing system for low- to medium-volume production of thin-film photovoltaic (PV) panels. ProtoScribe provides thin film PV panel manufacturers with a tool that enables concurrent development of thin film recipes and laser scribing methods.
• Eckhard Beyer presented with Arthur L. Schawlow Award in laser science and engineering
  Dr. Eckhard Beyer, Professor at the University of Technology Dresden and Executive Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS in Germany, has joined the "who's who" list of extraordinary laser pioneers. He was recently awarded the highly distinguished 2008 Arthur L. Schawlow Award for his outstanding contributions to laser science and engineering.
