  • Manufacturers, academics to present at IEEE/LEOS program this week
    At this week's Photonex 08, leading laser system manufacturers and university academics will take part in a high level seminar program on High Power Diode Lasers and Systems. Representatives from Alcatel Thales III-V Labs (France), Jenoptik (Germany), Intense and GSI Lasers, will be joined by academics from Cambridge, Glasgow, and Nottingham universities.
  • Bystronic Canada Ltd. holds opening ceremony
    Bystronic held a grand opening ceremony for its newest company, Bystronic Canada Ltd. on September 17, 2008. Located in Mississauga, Ontario, the new company is part of Bystronic's overall strategy for North America.
  • PhotoMachining hires new applications scientist
    PhotoMachining Inc., Pelham, NH, has announced that it has added a well-known laser scientist, Dr. Francis (Bo) Burns, to its staff.
  • Trumpf assumes control of SPI Lasers
    Laser and machine-tool manufacturer Trumpf (Ditzingen, Germany) has assumed control of SPI Lasers (Southampton, England) effective October 7, 2008. The bid submitted by Trumpf became effective after shareholders of SPI Lasers approved the sale of more than 90% of the company's shares to Trumpf.
  • VIDEO: Tamarack high-speed laser ablation process patterns biochips
    Tamarack Scientific Company (Corona, CA) has developed a laser ablation system that directly patterns biochip sensors in a thin layer of metal on polyimide. The video shows a 40 mm x 10 mm part being ablated in a thin layer of copper on polyimide, showing slow ramp-up in speed to a rate of over 150 parts per second.
  • FABTECH, Day 2: Optimistic mood continues
    Day two at FABTECH proved to be as positive as day one. More than 17,000 attendees passed through the doors and the general attitude reported to us by a substantial number of industry suppliers we interviewed was that these people were in a buying mood.

    Laser manufacturer DILAS Diodenlaser GmbH (Mainz, Germany) has formed a new business unit, DILAS Industrial Laser Systems. The independent business unit within DILAS Diodenlaser GmbH will focus on developing and manufacturing turnkey diode laser systems, driven by the success of its COMPACT Series fiber-coupled systems with power levels up to 500 W.
  • 2008 Innovationspreis winners receive awards
    Winners of the 2008 Berthold Leibinger Foundation Innovation Prize received their awards last month during a standing-room-only ceremony at Trumpf headquarters in Ditzingen, Germany. For 2008, the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung presented a total of four awards and a "special prize."
